Miri City Day Carnival

Celebrating the 7th anniversary of Miri’s elevation to a city !

In an effort to support Miri City Go Green, Miri City Council had implemented its third year of adopting green concept into their annual Miri City Day Celebration . The green campaign for 2010 city day celebration was ‘Say No to Plastic,’ the following year ‘Say No to Styrofoam’ and this year, ‘Say Yes to 3R (recycle, reduce and re-use)’.

The Carnival was held at Miri Outdoor Stadium on Sunday, 20 May 2012. Among the activities and programes held were folk games, food fair, green corner and kiddies corner. Two events — Largest Line Dance and Largest Orang Ulu Long Dance — also gained entries into the Malaysia Book of Records. There were also exhibition and demonstration booths promoting ‘Say Yes to 3R’ concept.

We took part in the exhibition booth to show that teaching aids, as well as crafts can be made or produced using materials that can be recycled.

The crowd and booths at the stadium.
Getting our booth ready. We could only put up the exhibits very early in the morning as we were worried that the things might be blown away or taken during the night before the BIG day.
Teachers putting up the paper chains made from newspapers.
All set and ready to receive visitors!
Some of the exhibits - scrap books, greeting cards, a roly-poly made from an empty milk tin, etc.
Others were : hats from various materials, cars from empty drinks packs or boxes, paper plates, trees from toilet paper rolls, etc.
A stove and oven made from a box, flowers from plastic bottles, and many more.
Another view of the hats and other crafts.
