Deepavali in School

DEEPAVALI IN SCHOOL

Although Deepavali is not widely celebrated in Sarawak, we did a special topic on this festivity on the 6th November to learn ~ who celebrate it, the legend behind this festival, how it is celebrated, Indian costumes, Indian food and Indian dances for our music and movement.

We came to school in Indian costumes, brought Indian food and had a good time, especially dancing to the Indian music!

Nabil and Aniq cutting and pasting to make the 'kolam' on paper with different shapes and sizes. Before starting the project, the children looked at different 'kolam' designs.

The children also looked at how houses were decorated for this festival ~ here the children were cutting and pasting leaves to put on the door. Every child needed to count the number of leaves on one strip of brown paper (for maths).

All children brought various Indian food for their break time - roti canai was the favourite food. They ate them with curry and dhal. The children also brought in muruku and various kinds of nuts.

The mango leaves used to decorate the door in Junior 2 class.

Here the mothers were showing some Indian dance movements to the children. They had a good time and we had a good time too! It was fun and enjoyable. The children loved it too!

The children had their own version of an Indian dance as shown by Arfan of Junior 3.
