Science Has Figured Out The Best Age To Start Giving Your Kids Chores

If you needed a reason to establish a regimen of chores for your kids beyond, "These rugs won't vacuum themselves," science has your back. Research shows that cleaning the house, taking out trash, washing windows or whatever else you might throw at the buggers instills a sense of mastery, self reliance, responsibility, empathy and respect for others — and the sooner you start, the better.
The study, which checked in with 84 kids during preschool and then at ages 10, 15 and in their mid-20s, found that the ones who began chores at ages 3 and 4 were more likely to have good relationships, achieve academic success and be self-sufficient than those who started as teens or had none at all.
Even better for your lawn? According to Richard Rende, a developmental psychologist in Paradise Valley, Ariz., and co-author of the forthcoming book Raising Can-Do Kids, doing chores may actually be a better strategy for long-term positive social and academic outcomes than whatever extra-curricular activities your kids are doing that make them too busy for chores. “Parents today want their kids spending time on things that can bring them success, but ironically, we've stopped doing one thing that's actually been a proven predictor of success—and that's household chores," he says.
Actually getting them to do their chores is a much less scientific challenge, but here are a few things to keep in mind:
  • It's not what you say, it's how you say it: Thanking your kids for “being a helper" creates positive identity. Saying “Let's do our chores" underscores cooperation. Complaining about your chores guarantees they will, too.
  • Prioritize chore time: It should be seen as equal in importance to oboe practice or the amateur Audubon society picnic.
  • Turn chores into a game: “Did you know the world record for bringing the trash and recycling to the curb is 48.7 seconds? Think you can beat that?"
  • Focus on the family: Whatever you have them doing, it should benefit everyone in the family and not just them (or you).

Learning About Colours

The starch mixture is gooey and feels like a gloop.  The basic colours were yellow, red and blue.  The children worked in a group of 5.   Some children were a bit squeamish playing with the gooey stuff. They not only learned about colours but about texture too ~ the gooey stuff was new to all of them.

My Body - The Skeleton

One of the topic covered under 'My Body' is 'My Skeleton' .  The children learned the names of the different skeleton and later made the 'Skeleton Bag'. 












A Lion Dance In School

Chinese New Year is here!  And so are the lion dance, the fire crackers, the ang pows, oranges, red lanterns!  Lion dance are always exciting and fascinating but can be frightening to some children.  As always, a lion dance troupe came to school today.  What an exciting and memorable time we had today!  The lions behaved like big 'cats' ~ playful, teasing and nuzzling the children.

Ta'aruf Program With New Parents

We feel it is important to share with our new parents our school curriculum and how we can work together as a team or partners in their children's education.  Alhamdulillah, we had a good turn out and the parents spent some time getting to know the teachers of their children.  Thank you and Jazakumullahu Khair to parents who came and for the contributing the refreshments. 

There were not enough chairs, so some parents had to sit on the stairs.

The school curriculum follows the Kurikulum Standard Prasekolah Kebangsaan, by the Ministry of Education.  The curriculum emphasis on the 4 M  ~ 
• Reading (Membaca)
•Writing (Menulis)
•Counting (Mengira)
•Reasoning (Menaakul)
The parents visited the classes and got to know the class teachers.  They spent time looking at the books, reading modules and talked about how they can help their children to read. 





The children who came along were 'entertained' by the teachers outside.
