Sea Creatures Theme - OCTOPUS ON SEAWEED

Monday, 23rd September 2013.  An interesting and easy cookery class for the 4 years old in the theme 'Sea Creatures'.    They will never forget the octopus after this class.   All the cutting and cooking in this activity were carried out by the teacher.  

Make 8 cuts on the sausages.    Put the sausages into boiling water and the sausages will open up or curl  like a flower.  This will be the octopus.

Cooked sausages.  The 8 cuts on the sausages that curled or opened up represented the tentacles.

Cooked spaghetti , buy the green type for the sea weed.

Take some sea weed.

Put some 'sea weed' into the container.

Put the 'octopus' on the 'sea weed'.

Some of the learning outcomes are ~  vocabulary, maths, fine motor skills development (using the tongs), science, language and socio-emotional development ( listening, following instructions, taking turns) and many more.

Reminder :  Do not always give your children too much of sausages.

Sand Play

Sand play is soothing and entertaining for children. Even adults can occasionally be caught running their fingers and toes through sand and enjoying its texture.  Children have the ability to manipulate sand into anything that they can imagine and encourage children to experiment with this very open-ended medium.  Sand play promotes physical development - digging, pouring, sifting, and scooping require children to use their upper bodies and arms.  It also encourages social skills ~  many of them will engage in pretend play as they combine to "cook" with the sand or construct roadways, dig tunnels, and build towers.  It also promotes cognitive development and teaches mathematical concepts.

TRIP TO LUAK ESPLANADE

Wednesday 25 September ~  the whole school went for a trip to Luak Esplanade, which is located in the out skirts of Miri city along the coastal highway.  It's a great place for family outings.  

We went in the chartered buses with many parents  following behind in their own cars.  As always, bus trips are an adventure for the children and children needed no extra effort to wake up early for this trip.   

Through these activities, the children learnt many things involving all their 5 senses and many other skills. They had LOTS of fun with their friends and best of all,  parents were involved in their learning discoveries ~ the icing on the cake for the children! 

We started off with a very brief circle time and story time.  Then the teachers explained the activities that they were going to do for the day.

Lots of sand play with parents joining in.  The children brought toys and tools for sand play.  The children had so much fun that it was difficult to stop to go home.

Fruits Theme ~ Banana Bugs!

 On 15 July 2013, the 4 years old 'cook up'  bugs in the theme on 'Fruits'.  In this class, children came to school in 'Yellow' theme - yellow t-shirts, pants and some even brought in yellow food containers!

Getting children involved in cooking is a good way to get them to eat -  especially to encourage them to eat vegetables.   Besides learning new words, use the opportunity to teach maths, science and to learn to clean up.  It's also a good way of bonding with your child.   Children always love to eat what they have created.

To make banana bugs,  get some bananas,

ripe bananas

chocolate chips for the 'EYES' and some pretzel sticks biscuits for the 'LEGS'.

Peel the banana.  You can ask your child to learn to peel the banana.

Place 2 chocolate chips for the 'eyes' on the banana.

Push in the pretzel sticks for the 'legs'.  Let the children count the number of 'eyes' and 'legs'.

Malaysia Day Theme

We decorated the school with Malaysia flags Jalur Gemilang and crafts based on the theme.  Children came to school in their traditional clothes.
