The weather was fine. The children were excited about the visit ~ parents remarked that the children had no problem in waking up for school. We chartered a bus and that was part of the excitement too!

Frog's Eggs In My Drink!

Frog's Eggs in My Drink?

In the topic on FROGS, Junior 3 looked into the characteristics, life-cycle, habitats, etc of frogs. At the end of the topic, the children had an interesting drink - a drink with frog's eggs in it!

It took a bit of coaxing for the children to try the drink but they loved it in the end after we told them it was NOT frog's eggs after all.

What's that in my drink ?

When soaked in water, the seeds outer skins absorb the water, swell and become gelatinous. Then, the swollen seeds are added to drinks such as rose syrup. They are tasteless.

J3 VISIT TO PETROLEUM MUSEUM & GRAND OLD LADY

Miri City Day ~ 20 May 2010

We had a special topic on this. The children learned how Miri developed into a city, the discovery of oil and symbols of Miri.

Junior 3 visited the Petroleum Museum. The Petroleum Museum is next to 'The Grand Old Lady of Miri' - the first oil derrick and the first site where oil was drilled in Miri.

Fardhu Ain

Fardhu Ain - For children of Junior 1, 2 & 3.

Learning to perform the solat is part of the lesson. Children learn some basic things required before solat - taking the ablution (wuduk), covering onself properly, facing the qiblat, right sequence of movements and reading the verses correctly.

Mastering the basics to be able to read the quran is another part of Fardhu Ain. Here, we used IQRA method and once the children have completed the book , they will be able to read the quran.

Children are taught to write and read basic Arabic language.

Another part of Fardhu Ain is memorizing short Surahs and simple doa.

In the theme ' Safety' , one of the topics covered was road safety and what better way to teach the children than by having traffic games at Bulatan Park. Children learned to read the road signs, read places to stop and most of all ~ IT WAS FUN ! Our deepest appreciation to the parents who became traffic wardens for the traffic games and to those who joined us to have fun at the park! Thank you.

Visit To Gua Longhouse

The children set off by bus from the school. Gua Longhouse is an Iban longhouse, about half an hour drive out of Miri. It is constructed according to the traditional Iban longhouse, using traditional materials and there are many things kept inside ~ musical instruments, farming tools, 'heads', etc. The children observed parts of the house, structures and materials used to construct it. They also recorded many of the things found inside the longhouse. We brought in some palm fronds 'daun ketupat' for the children to try weaving the ketupat - a traditional way of cooking rice for festivities and for special ceremony. Some mothers were experts in ketupat weaving and taught the children. Teachers and other parents too tried their hands at ketupat making. It was not easy at all but we all enjoyed the experience.
