J1 VISIT TO MIRI PUBLIC LIBRARY

The class of Junior 1 made a visit to Miri Public Library on Tuesday, 19 April in a chartered bus. Miri Public Library provides activities for children every Saturday from 10 am- 11 am. Do send your children there to enjoy the activities. The children were really excited about the trip ~ and obviously, going in the bus was a BIG THRILL!

This is the building of Miri Dewan Suarah where Miri Public Library is situated. Surrounding the Dewan Suarah is a beautiful landscape garden, the Miri City Fan. Here's a photo showing the garden.

Ms Josephine and Ms Molly, the librarians greeted us as we arrived at the library and brought the children to the Children Section. After explaining the functions and rules of the library , Ms Josephine told a story about a white cat who wanted to be black as its mother and siblings.

The children were very responsive to the story.

The children then were asked to draw the face of a cat after the story telling. Busy! Busy! Lots of ' interesting 'cats' emerged!

These are some drawings of 'CATS' done by the children - beautiful and unique drawings ! The children are aware of the parts of the face of the cat ~ you can see 'EYES', 'NOSE', 'EARS', 'MOUTH'.

While waiting for the others to finish their drawings, the children were asked to choose books they liked and read them quietly.

The last activity was to make a house origami. Quite a challenge for the children to follow and required help from the librarians and teachers.

ANIMAL MASQUERADE

We started a theme on 'ANIMALS' this month. One of the learning activities was to have an 'ANIMAL MASQUERADE' ~ BUT before that, the children were asked what their favorite animals were , looked up on the animals and finally made a mask of the animal (with parent's help).

The children were really excited to put on their masks on Monday, 18 April. We had a special 'assembly of animals' , identified the various animals, then sing and dance to many animal-theme songs.

The best thing was that every child has a mask ~ an involvement from the parents in making the mask with their children. Well done to all parents and thank you for your support!

BOOK PICNIC

Unfortunately, it rained the night before and the ground at the park was wet. The teachers had come prepared with plastic sheets but the ground was too wet and mushy to sit down. In the end we had our book picnic at the car park area ~ at least the ground was firm to sit on.

The teachers started off with reading the children's favourite story books from the school.

Then the children read their books that they brought along - sharing with their friends and teachers.

PICNIC AND FUN

After the reading session, we packed up to go to the playground ~ BUT it started to rain instead. So we rushed back into the bus to return back to school. However, we discovered that it was NOT raining at the other park - Taman Selera. We decided to have the picnic there instead, although the ground was wet.

Here's Junior 1 saying out the doa before eating. Junior 2 waiting for everybody to be seated before saying out the doa. Beautiful and delicious cupcakes made by Danish's mum, Junior 1. After enjoying the food, the children tidied their things and were allowed to play at the play ground.

Now its time to go back to the school in the bus. This is also a good opportunity to teach the children to queue before boarding the bus.

After a hard day's 'play', most of the children were tired and fell asleep in the bus on the way back to the school.

We believe children should have fun, breathe fresh air, have good times with their friends, have opportunities to explore their surroundings safely, to be creative, to learn and practise social skills, to be civic minded, to be practising Muslims ~ and the children are LEARNING all these and many new things at the same time even at outings, picnics, at the play ground, etc ; things that are not found in the exercise books or work books in school !

Children will be children only ONCE in their life time - let them remember their kindergarten days that were filled with FUN, JOY and GOOD TIMES. Let them grow into life-long readers, where books will be their friends; NOT the TV or games from the mobile phones or internet.

J3 TOPIC ON FOOD

Junior 3 did a theme on food and here are some of the learning activities.

1. Cows produce milk and the meat is a source of protein. The children also learnt the physical characteristics of the cow as shown by these drawings - cute looking cows.

The tail cannot be seen due to space constraint , ie the paper is small ~ but it is a cute and happy cow.

This is a 'serious' cow. Angelina focused on the udder. The udder of this cow is way down below the ...... ground? When asked, Angelina said ; 'Because the udder produces milk'.

2. A short poem and sounds made by the cow.

3. Cow crafts from toilet paper rolls.

4. For maths, the class made a simple chart of their preferences of food.

5. A short description of 'My Breakfast' in Bahasa Melayu with illustrations.

6. The children also cut out their favourite food from magazines and pasted them onto the styrofoam containers.

7. BROCCOLI IN THE FOREST

A salad made of carrots, sausages and broccoli but with a different way of presentation. We told the children to ask their parents to steam their salad so that it will be more acceptable for them to eat.
